Interventional Pain Medicine

Interventional pain medicine is a medical subspecialty of pain management.
Dr. Brown uses various techniques to manage acute, chronic, persistent and intractable pain with his patients. Physicians trained in Interventional Pain Medicine perform minimally invasive procedures that involves precise needle placement to deliver medications in targeted areas of specific nerve roots or muscle groups.
Some common procedures performed are:
Epidural Steroid Injections
ESI is the most common type of injection that it given to relieve back pain. This procedure is performed to help relieve back pain and pain that radiates to the arm or leg (depending on the disc herniation) by reducing the inflammation and breaking the pain cycle. This treatment involves the injection of corticosteroids into the affected area. The location of the injection depends on the patient’s symptoms and the MRI findings.
ESI’s can be therapeutic (treat pain symptoms), diagnostic (to locate the source of pain), or both.
Facet Joint Injections
If a facet joint is injured or become arthritic, pain can result. A facet block is a type of injection that affects the facet joints. The injection may contain a mixture of medications, including a local anesthetic to numb the joint area and/or a corticosteroid to reduce inflammation.
Nerve Blocks
A nerve root block involves an injection into a specific nerve root. Steroids and local anesthetics may be used to relieve pain in the area near the nerve.
Trigger Point Injections
Trigger points are isolated areas in skeletal muscle which, when touched, produce pain. A single or repetitive injury can result in the development of a trigger point, which may cause pain in the area, along with decreased range of motion. Trigger points often occur in the muscles which are used to maintain body posture. A trigger point injection involves administering medication in a localized, targeted manner to relieve pain in the affected area. Trigger point injections are performed in the office.
Procedures are performed in an out-patient setting.
